fingir (Del lat. fingĕre)

1. Dar a entender algo que no es cierto.

Fingir is a publication showcasing artists from the Central American diaspora, whose mission is to highlight issues and topics traditionally considered culturally taboo, and strengthen the intergenerational ties between families and their roots. From the mass displacement of families on account of convoluted wars and political turmoil, emerged First Generation children in countries all over the globe, creating a unique cultural identity existing somewhere between new country and old. The term “fingir” refers to the societal pressures of conforming to an absolute truth, rather than embracing a dichotomy in which both truths coexist simultaneously. Fingir is a space for us to be exactly who we are, dissolving the misconception of a homogenous, singular identity, and reclaiming the right to categorize ourselves the way we choose. 

Fingir es un libro exhibiendo artistas de la diáspora Centroamericana, para levantar las voces de nuestra comunidad y fortalecer la conexión intergeneracional entre familias y sus raíces centroamericanas. A partir del desplazamiento de familias a causa de las guerras e inestabilidad política, nacieron niños de primera generación en países alrededor del mundo, creando una identidad cultural que existe entre nueva patria y tierra natal. El nombre “fingir” se refiere a la presión social para conformarse con una verdad absoluta, en lugar de aceptar una dicotomía que abarca ambas verdades simultáneamente. Fingir es un espacio para expresarnos libres y auténticos, descartando la percepción de una identidad uniforme, homogénea, y retomando el derecho a clasificarnos en nuestros propios términos.
